Cardiovascular disease is an umbrella term for several conditions impacting heart health and blood vessel functionality. By understanding the various risk factors for heart disease, individuals can mitigate their chances of experiencing a critical medical emergency, such as a heart attack or stroke.

To begin, closely related health conditions influence a person's odds of developing heart disease, including elevated blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Without proper intervention, high blood pressure can significantly weaken a person's blood vessels, heart, and other major organs, including the kidneys and brain. High blood pressure is especially dangerous when it comes to controlling heart disease risk because it is generally an asymptomatic condition, meaning individuals do not experience any health issues until they experience a serious medical event, such as heart failure.

Similarly, high levels of cholesterol result in buildups along the walls of a person's arteries, including those leading to and from the heart. As the arteries grow narrower, the flow of blood slows down, causing a multitude of serious health problems throughout the body. Like blood pressure, cholesterol levels do not create noticeable symptoms, making it important for Americans to keep up with regularly scheduled doctor's appointments.

Women should limit themselves to one drink per day, while men should consume no more than two alcoholic beverages daily. All Americans should completely refrain from tobacco use, especially smoking. Nonsmokers should also avoid exposure to secondhand smoke, which can also increase their risk of cardiovascular disease.

Doctors and researchers have linked lipids, including cholesterol, to artery blockages and related conditions that contribute to serious medical conditions, such as strokes and heart attacks. Through various strategies and techniques, lipidologists support individuals in lowering their cholesterol numbers and addressing other lipid-based health issues.

Lipids are fatty compounds that perform various tasks throughout the body. Lipids make up cell membranes and play a role in admitting and denying different substances to and from cells. In addition to storing energy and absorbing nutrients, lipids play a crucial role in the creation of hormones. Although lipids play several important roles in the human body, an excess of lipids can cause serious health problems. To determine whether they have too many lipids, a person may undergo a lipid panel, which is often overseen or reviewed by a lipidologist.

Lipidologists draw on their advanced knowledge of lipids to go beyond standard blood testing and examine how fatty compounds are impacting a patient's arteries. They are especially well-versed in cholesterol issues. Like other lipids, cholesterol is not inherently bad. In fact, the human body requires a certain amount and type of cholesterol to produce bile in the liver, create specific hormones, and perform other critical jobs. The effects of atherosclerosis are often exacerbated by LDL buildups, which cause blockages in the arteries, further restricting the flow of blood and increasing a person's risk of heart attack and stroke. Lipidologists work with patients to help control this risk. Treatment options vary depending on a person's condition, but common options include medical nutrition therapy and the development of a fitness plan. Lipidologists can also prescribe several medications designed to manage high blood cholesterol levels, including statins, cholesterol absorption inhibitors, PCSK9 inhibitors, bile acid sequestrants, or some combination of these and other medicines.

Before diagnosing and treating patients, lipidologists undergo comprehensive training with the American Board of Clinical Lipidology. They draw on this knowledge to address a range of health conditions beyond high cholesterol and too much LDL, ranging from hypertriglyceridemia, or too many triglycerides, to below normal levels of cholesterol, a condition known as hypolipidemia. Like high cholesterol levels and heart disease, lipidologists treat these conditions with a combination of medication and lifestyle changes.

Although lipidologists provide patients with expert care regarding lipoproteins, atherosclerosis, and how diet and physical activity impact lipid levels throughout the body, individuals should bring initial concerns to their primary care provider. Doctors can assess a person's cholesterol levels and devise a basic treatment plan before recommending that a patient seek out additional insight and support from a lipidologist.
